HIV Capacity Building Partners Summit

As part of building upon the success of the Kigali conference held in June 2009, the Regional AIDS Training Network (RATN) has partnered with other organisations (including HEARD) in hosting a Capacity Building Partners Summit on HIV which will be held from 16-18 March 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Framework for Women, Girls and Gender Equality in NSPs

In a joint initiative between the Gender Equality and HIV Prevention Programme at HEARD and the ATHENA Network, and in collaboration with over 15 endorsing regional and international organisations, a Framework for Women, Girls, and Gender Equality in National Strategic Plans in Southern and Eastern Africa has been developed. This Framework outlines what NSPs in this region need to include if they are to meaningfully respond to the gendered inequalities underlying the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

World AIDS Day 2010

On 1 December 2010 HEARD joins the global community in commemorating World AIDS Day. While eastern and southern Africa have only 5.4% of the global population it is home to a staggering 50% of people living with HIV and AIDS. There are approximately 16.1 million people infected in the region, and the numbers continue to grow.

To mark World AIDS Day, HEARD's executive director Professor Alan Whiteside will deliver a public lecture entitled, 'Safe Sex/no sex Month: Could it Work? An Innovative Response for Preventing HIV Transmission' on 1 December at Edgewood Campus (University of KwaZulu-Natal).

Prevention Interventions within Workplace Programmes

The 3rd HIV/AIDS in the Workplace Conference which was held from 9 - 11 November 2010 at Ghallager Estate, Midrand, Johannesburg provided useful research data that could be used to strengthen prevention interventions within workplace programmes.

HEARD and the Athena Network Host Consultative Workshop about Gendering NSPs

In October 2010 HEARD and the Athena Network hosted a one-day consultative workshop in Durban with key civil society, UN and research partners from across southern Africa to discuss and identify key content in National Strategic Plans (NSPs) that is needed to meaningfully address women, girls and gender equality in the regional HIV response. This report captures the key debates, lessons learned and ways forward for engendering NSPs that emerged during the workshop.
